The Ghana Immigration is the first point of contact for anyone who enters Ghana. This is because they are the first line of defense and per their mandate, they are responsible for the entry and exit of persons in the country.

Some of the roles and functions of the Ghana Immigration Service include;
1. Regulating the movement of persons in and out of the country
2. Issuing requite permits to foreigners
3. Ensuring compliance with immigration laws
4. Assisting the processing of Ghana passport applications
5. Removing illegal immigrants, Facilitating trade and tourism

The Ghana Immigration Service render permits such as;
1. Visa on arrival;

this is obtaining a Ghanaian visa at the airport for persons who do not have a Ghana embassy in their home country or it’s of distance.
Requirements to obtain Visa On Arrival include;
1. Application letter from the company
2. Company documents (company code, company registration certificate, tax clearance certificate, certificate of commencement of business)
3. Bio-data page of passport of the foreigner
4. Bio-data page of passport of signatory of application letter

2. Work permit;

those entitled to work permits are foreigners working in Ghana.
The types of work permit include;
1. GIPC-Ghana Investment Promotion Centre
2. IQC- Ministry of Interior Quota
3. Immigration work permit
4. Free zones work permit
Requirements for a work permit include;
1. company documents (certificate of registration, certificate of incorporation, certificate to commence business and companies code)
2. GIPC registration certificate
3. Company’s current tax clearance certificate
4. Company’s audited accounts of previous year
5. Medical report from any recognized hospital in Ghana
6. Police clearance report from home country
7. Curriculum vitae/Resume
6. Offer /Appointment letter/contract of employment.

Note that it takes one month for the work permit to be done. Also, foreigners get residence permit in line with work.

3. Indefinite residence permit;
Ths a permit acquired by a foreigner married to a Ghanaian to reside in Ghana permanently.

The types of indefinite residence permit are;
Indefinite residence status generally and indefinite residence permit status for foreign Spouses.

The indefinite residence status generally is an indefinite residence permit given to an investor or to someone whose continues
stay in Ghana has contributed substantially to the economy.

The requirements for indefinite residence status generally include;
1. A completed application form
2.Two current passport size photographs
3. Application letter from sponsor
4. Attestation letter by two Ghanaian character referees (notaries public, lawyers, senior public officers with copies of their national ID)
5. Photocopy of applicants bio-data page of passport
6. Police report
7. Evidence of immovable properties (indenture, site plan etc where applicable)
8. Company’s documents (companies code, audited account for the past three years), SSNIT
9. Returns of Ghanaian employees, tax clearance certificate
10. Evidence of social contributions (donations and charity work etc. where applicable)
11. Medical report
12. Photocopy of applicants non-citizen I.D card

Requirements for indefinite residence status for foreign spouses
1. A completed application form
2. Two current passport size photographs
3. Application letter from spouse
4. Attestation letter by two Ghanaian character referees (notaries public, lawyers, senior public officers with copies of their national ID)
5. Photocopy of applicants bio-data page of passport
6. Police report
7. Evidence of immovable properties (indenture, site plan etc where applicable)
6. Photocopy of Ghanaian spouse’s passport bio-data page

Benefits of indefinite residence permit:
A person with indefinite residence status is entitled to remain indefinitely in Ghana.
He or she is entitled to enter Ghana without a visa
He or she is entitled to work in Ghana as a self-employed or as an employee without a work permit
He or She is subject to the laws of Ghana
A non-Ghanaian’s child is eligible for a dependant permit
